To know someone

What happened to dating?! Where did it go and why is “hanging out” the new dating. In today’s generation, we’ve lost the concept of what it means to date. We give so many excuses for not wanting to date and to really go out and get to know someone! It’s either because they say it’s too much money, maybe they don’t have the motivation to put in this kind of effort, or maybe they just don’t see the purpose! We are missing the why. Why do we date? Why do we put the time in?

This week in class we talked about what this is is called and the why behind dating. There are four parts to this it goes in a pattern with dating, courtship, engagement, and finally marriage. These steps are so incredibly critical for a truly happy successful marriage because it gives you the chance to really know someone and to build trust in a safe environment. It gives you the chance to practice the skills and roles that you would later hope and trust your spouse would be able to carry and demonstrate in marriage. The world sees this as old-fashioned but looking over the years you can see how this mindset is causing conflicts. Divorces continue to rise! There are so many reasons for this but one of them can easily be because these couples are rushing the steps.

When we skip these steps we miss out on the chance to truly know someone. I found the concept of “falling in love” so real as we talked this week. To fall in love is skipping these steps. Yes it’s exciting, thrilling, and it happens so fast and as humans, we live for that thrill! But when you fall in love it hurts, even more, to fall out of it. You come out just as fast as you went in. There was no intention, you committed to them before you knew them and you began to rely on them before you trusted them. Creating intention within a relationship is building a relationship on a foundation that a celestial marriage can grow. Life won't always be easy, and other will be so many ups and downs but it's up to us to take these steps with intention so we can truly know the person we are with and to create an environment where we can choose them. When you find the one you want to marry and they know all the parts of you the good and the bad then you can have more confidence in the love they give you and the love that they have for you! They know who you are, this is a love that is so worth waiting for.

This week I met a beautiful family who showed their example of being international in their relationship. You knew it was built on love. You could feel it when you walked into their home, it was a foundation built on the godly ground over the world. Their care for one another was intentional. As they shared with me their love story you knew the time spent meant everything to them now, you could feel the trial they had been through but you could see the support they gave each other. Their love wasn't just built on "till death do us part" it was built upon time and all eternity and they knew it. This is what they were motivated by! They didn’t do anything out of duty or fear, they loved each other out of love. They built their relationship on solid ground because they knew what it meant. Being in their home you could instantly feel the spirit, not only that you could see the spirit working between them. They knew was it meant to truly be in love.
